The Great Wall of China is a highly recognized icon of the People's Republic of China, yet few truly understand the history and significance of this amazing feat of ancient technology. Its historic and strategic importance is matched only by its architectural significance. The world's largest structure and the longest defensive fortification4,the Great Wall of China has been surrounded by mystery ever since it was built. Its course, twisting over mountains, and undulating alongside rivers, through deserts, ravines and valleys resembles the body of a dragon. Legends tell us that the first emperor flrew through the night on a flying horse, mapping out the wall in just one night. Or - even more imaginative, the emperor used his magical whip to carve out the mountains, altering the course of the Yellow River, making way for his mighty wall.7 The Great Wall of China is not a continuous wall, but is a collection of many walls that often follow the crest of hills on the southern edge of the Mongolian plain. This website will help to explain the historical and cultural significance of this man-made wonder.
